Who We Are

Foundation

Founded in 2020 SG Berlin was created to provide a place for Berlin based players to play XVs rugby at a high level, so as to establish a 3rd center for German Rugby excellence away from it’s traditional heartlands in around Heidelberg and Hannover.

Growth

Since the teams foundation the number of players with XVs registration in Berlin has grown from 6 (players travelling long distances to play for other clubs), to over 70. The team entered the Women’s Bundesliga in 2022 and finished 4th in the B Division in it’s first season and 2nd the season after.

Present

Currently players and staff are drawn from the five Berlin clubs with active women’s 7s teams: RK03 Berlin, Berlin Irish RFC, Berlin Bruisers, Berliner SV92 and Berliner SC with training rotating between the different clubs training grounds around the city. The team receives financial and organisational support through the Berliner Rugby Verband and the Verein zur Förderung des deutschen Frauenrugby e.V. reducing the barriers to particpation for it’s players.

Future

The stated ambition is to acheive promotion to the Bundesliga A division to allow the fielding of a 2nd XV in the Bundesliga B to continue developing the strength in depth of Berlin Rugby. A major asset in this growth is the growing U18 rugby squad in Berlin who reached the U18 National Final in the 2023-24 season, showing a lot of promise for the future of rugby in the capital
