Match Report: SG Berlin 31 - 10 Eintracht Frankfurt

Berlin welcomed Eintracht Frankfurt for what should have been their first home game of the season on Saturday 30th November. Pitch closures across Berlin left the team scrambling for alternatives and Veltener Rugby Club, from Brandenburg very graciously stepped in to host the game instead. With preparations and travel disrupted it would be the team who could best regain concentration who would be able to  take control of the game, and with it the league table.

1st Half

Frankfurt started the game brightly, combining fast ruck ball with a varied attack and repeatedly probing the edges of the Berlin attacking line and causing some difficulties. Meanwhile Berlin’s normally strong kicking game wasn’t quite clicking and Frankfurt were able to retain plenty of territory. Berlin did retain very aggressive linespeed in defence however and it was through this their first score would come. Centre Von Knoblauch handily intercepting a poor pass and running 50m to score under the sticks, giving Brennan an easy conversion - which she took. 7-0

Frankfurt continued to have the majority of the play and poor discipline, ever a problem for Berlin, started to take its toll. The visitors were camped in the home 22 and Berlin couldn’t clear their lines well. Despite all their possession Frankfurt lacked much penetration in attack and again tended shifted the ball from side to side waiting for a gap to open. Finally and despite a heroic last ditch tackle attempt by Hirschberg - making her first appearance after an 8 month injury lay-off - the opposition winger was able to score directly in the corner, with the conversion missed from out wide. 7-5

Now it was Berlin who took control of the game whilst the guests were unable to exit their defensive zone. Despite a misfiring lineout, the hosts found their forwards were making major gains, including 2 scrum turnovers, and when a snipe from Hirschberg was brought down 15m short the pack went to work, driving forward and wearing down the opposition attack. With attention diverted, Weber and Von Knoblauch ran a screen play allowing the young centre to glide through the line nearly untouched to score her second. 14-5

It seemed the game was turning into a real slug fest, with the teams trading blow after blow. The visitors had plenty of ball but couldn’t seem to gain entry into the Berlin 22, whilst Berlin’s normally strong territorial game had disappeared and a more physical style resulted in plenty of running rugby. This took its toll though, with captain Dompert being forced off with a shoulder injury after 25 minutes and Goujon coming on into the backrow.

On the half hour mark though Berlin were able to extend their lead as Von Knoblauch completed a remarkable first half hat-trick: a wonderful individual effort beating 4 defenders and streaking away to score, with Brennan adding the extras. 21-5 Frankfurt came back strong and managed to work the ball into the hosts 22 once again, but simply couldn’t find a way through the defensive line before half time.

Score Berlin 21 - 5 Frankfurt

2nd Half

After beginning with a Frankfurt yellow card for a dangerous tackle agains Lavouê, the second half followed a similar pattern to the first, the sides trading blows in the center of the pitch, but struggling to build territory due to misfiring lineouts. In fact it would be from a Frankfurt lineout that the next points would come, when a poor throw was stolen by Labourdette, Murtagh reacted quickly, Cannoing her way through 2 tackles and cracking the defence wide open. Quick hands found substitute Braun, on for Brucklachner who did well to beat the covering fullback and streak away for a try on debut. 26-5

The guests tightened up their game significantly and it started to pay dividends. Strong carrys close to the ruck began to wear down the Berlin defence, and cause real problems. By targeting the area close to the ruck Berlin’s impressive linespeed was neutralized and worse, defensive penalties began to mount as bodies and minds began to tire. A double change in the front row saw Fisher and Mahns Mardy enter for Frenzel and Lavoue to freshen up the pack. Following a team warning Braun was shown a yellow card for not releasing before a jackal attempt and this left the backfield exposed.

Frankfurt immediately took advantage of this with a number of kicks targeting the left wing whilst Canaras and Ziffels were pulling double duty. Moss came on at 12 to add more kicking options and add some energy into the back line, while Lormis slotted into the 2nd row to replace labourdette who was walking a disciplinary tightrope. Berlin were able to clear their lines through extremely strong defence and good kicking but poor discipline again cost them, with substitute Matthies leaving the field after only 2 minutes for a high tackle. Repeated penalties eventually saw the guests make their way over in the corner, with the conversion missed from out wide. 26.10

The last 15 minutes of the game followed a similar pattern, Frankfurt attacking with good structure but not much penetration except through their large forwards, whilst Berlin continued to be a menace on the counterattack. An impressive 80 metre kick chase by Hermlin left Frankfurt stranded on the edge of their own 22, and when a few phases later Fisher ripped the ball free, simple handling got it to Brennan who dashed past two defenders to score her 3rd try of the season in the corner, leaving a final score of 31-10

Match Report: RC Rottweil 5 - 19 SG Berlin

Berlin came away from the long away trip down to Rottweil on 2nd November with a win, albeit one they had to work very hard for against tough opposition. In the end the

1st Half

In the early phases both teams looked happy to play their own game systems. Rottweil dominated possession but could do little with it, whilst Berlin’s defence, particularly in the midfield as well as excellent tactical kicking from Brennan and Brucklachner meant the first 20 minutes were nearly entirely deep in the home teams half. Under pressure Rottweil began to make mistakes, with only a wayard pass denying the opening try when Bruchlachner was well wrapped up by the fullback. Rottweil tried to clear their lines but Ruf was a constant danger on the counter attack and when the referee blew for a penalty directly infront of the posts, Brennan stepped up to kick the first three points of the game.

The setpiece which had been an area forwards coach Doug Branch had worked with the pack relentlessly on was much improved compared to last seasons showing, where Rottweil had dominated deadball situations. Fisher (removed due to suspected concussion after just 20 minutes) and Frenzel who replaced them both threw and scrummaged excellently. This denied the Baden Württemburg outfit a lot of front foot ball and meant they struggled to clear their lines. When a clearance kick was charged down, Steyer (playing her first game at scrum half in 2 seasons), was there to jackal an isolated winger and force another penalty, which Brennan promptly knocked over to make it 0-6 to Berlin after 20 minutes of play.

Rottweil came back swinging however with a much more direct style and began to make inroads closer to the ruck. Not only were their carries more dangerous, they began to produce penalties against the reeling visitors who were repeatedly caught offside or infringing at the ruck. A sequence of 7 penalties in a row over 10 minutes sound found Berlin defending in their 22 under warning from the referee. With the defensive line disorganised a cute chip kick put Bruchlachner under huge pressure and whilst she did get her kick away, it went straight into the hands of the Rottweil 10 who danced her way through offside Berlin defenders to score in the corner. At the conversion, some confusion from the kicker and referee allowed replacement hooker Frenzel to charge down the kick after the kicker clearly moved. Whilst the referee sent Frenzel back to her line, the distraction had clearly had an effect as the kick clattered low off the crossbar on the stroke of halftime.

Score Rottweil 5-6 Berlin.

2nd Half

With a half time message focussing on better discipline in defence and accuracy in attack Berlin took to the field with Goujon replacing Kronberg and Captain Dompert moving into the front row.

By now the sun had set and under the floodlights the game only grew in physicality. Rottweil started where they had left off, hammering the Berlin pack with strong carries and trying to smash their way through or force mistakes they could capitalise on. Berlin looked calmer and weathered the storm well, playing for territory and repeatedly forcing the home team 20-30 metres or more back dow nthe field with kicks that the opposition back three repeatedly failed to deal with, keeping much of the play on the edge of the Rottweil 22. Twice in a row Rottweil switched their focus to their backs to try to exit and both times gave away penalties which Brennan converted to take a 5-12 lead by the hour mark.

Moss and Canaras came onto the field and whilst Rottweil began trying to kick their way out of pressure, these fresh legs in the backs meant usually Berlin were able to run the ball back in, often with advantage. When on 65 minutes Moss ripped a ball free in contact, Brennan was able to carry through to just 10 metres from the line. Then the forwards got to work with powerful pick and go phases, first gaining penalty advantage and then with Captain Dompert smashing her way across the line for her 2nd try in 2 games. Brennan converted this too, to keep her 100% record for the day.

With only seconds still to play Berlin attacked again and made it to within 5 metres of the try line before a knock-on saw the final whistle. Final Score: Rottweil 5 - 19 Berlin

Squad:

STARTERS: Ruf, Shaw, Von Knoblauch, Weber, Brucklachner, Brennan, Steyer, Murtagh, Dankou, Labourdette, Kayser, Dompert (c), Schneider, Fisher, Kronberg. FINISHERS: Frenzel, Goujon, Moss, Canaras

Match Report: SG Baden 0 - 39 SG Berlin

Berlin kicked off their Bundesliga B season on Saturday 28th September with a convincing away win over league newcomers SG Baden.

1st Half

From the kickoff an aggressive Berlin defence kept Baden pinned in their 22, unable to clear their lines. Impressive linespeed forced a loose ball which was seized by outside center Von Knoblauch to take possession. The forwards got to work with some tight powerful carries and created an easy overlap for flyhalf Brennan to pur Von Knoblauch through to score her first ever senior try, just 2 minutes into her debut.

Next Berlin played through the phases, making 40 meters through the Baden defence before a knock on in the opposition 22 forced the first scrum of the game. Unfortunately the front row were penalised, but when the home team took a quick tap penalty they were immediately turned over, giving Berlin excellent field position. Within two phases Brennan herself cut through the defence after selling an outrageous dummy to take the score to 0-10 after just 6 minutes.

There would be no let up after this either. Berlin continued to make good ground with a simple attacking plan, but struggles with discipline, particularly at set pieces would repeatedly give Baden a chance to breathe. It was however Berlin who benefitted from the next infringements as first: a quick tap penalty following a high tackle allowed Brennan to crash over and then convert her own try, then Shaw was badly fouled whilst running for the line and with a Baden flanker in the sinbin with a yellow card it was the turn of another promising youngster to score as Hermlin crashed over from some pick and goes.

With the bonus point secured after just 22 minutes Berlin noticeably dropped in intensity and it was their turn to be put under pressure. Baden spent much of the next 10 minutes camped inside the Berlin 22 but were repeatedly stopped by last ditch tackling and superb breakdown work by Steyer and Labourdette from the backrow. Eventually Berlin kicked back into gear and their superior kicking game forced play back to the other end of the pitch, where Canaras scored on the left wing from a simple strike move to take a 27-0 half time lead

2nd Half

The same themes continued into the second half, with Berlin controlling all aspects of open play but their own poor discipline denying them field position and struggling at set pieces. Baden attacked gamely and with speed but often became isolated or forced into errors to conceed position back to Berlin. Nonetheless with the ball spending so long in the Baden 22 points were inevitable and after first Weber, then Labourdette broke the defence line it was Von Knoblauch again who danced over for a 2nd try.

Coach Turner rang the changes and with a full replacement front row Berlin began to gain dominance at set pieces too, forcing 2 scrum penalties and stealing multiple Baden lineouts. In open play Berlin kept their foot on the gas and looked eager to score, perhaps too eager as first full back Mongin was bundled into touch just short of the line then Brennan was tackled just short, looking for her Hattrick. Finally after Ziffels who’d enjoyed an industrious day at scrum half was tackled inches short of the line, it was captain Dompert who dotted down for the final score.

With 10 minutes to go Berlin kept looking for more points but struggled to stick to their attacking system, having lost some rhythm following their substitutions. Baden attempted to counter attack but were unable to capitalise on a disorganised visitors defence. Eventually the referee blew for full time, with Berlin coming away 0-39 winners and taking 5 points back to the capital to start the season

Squad:

STARTERS: Mongin, Shaw, Von Knoblauch, Weber, Canaras, Brennan, Ziffels, Mahns-Mardy, Steyer, Labourdette, Sanderson, Dompert (c), Armerding, Frenzel, Hermlin. FINISHERS: Fisher, Ziggl, Lavoue, Kronberg, Siering, Dankou

7s Landesverbandsmeisterschaft 2024

This Sunday saw the Berliner Rugby Verband hosting the Landesverbandsmeisterschaft 2024 at Sportanlage Jungfernheide. Teams representing 7 (due to a late withdrawl) of the German Bundesländer gathered to find out who would take home the National title. With NRW, Bavaria and Berlin in the tournament it meant 3 of last season’s top 4 finisher’s taking part - sure to be a tight race at the top.

Group Stage

The late withdrawal of Hamburg left Group B with just 3 teams, so the format switched to a 7 team tournament with A seeing 2 games by seeding and B done as a single round robin. In Group A, despite 2 injuries during the group stages, NRW looked like the early pace setters, posting convincing wins against both Saxony and RLP, whilst Saxony took a win against Hessen to finish 2nd. In Group B Bayern set a marker with a 20-5 statement win against Berlin during the very first game of the day, and also won an end to end battle against an expansive Thüringen team. Berlin rallied and showed their class by shutting out Thüringen and taking a 31-0 win to take 2nd place

Group A:

1st NRW
2nd Saxony
3rd Rheinland Pfalz
4th Hessen

Group B

1st Bayern
2nd Berlin
3rd Thüringen
DNS Hamburg

Finals

The semi final pairings were both especially hard fought, with Bayern vs Saxony a fast running affair where a well drilled Bayern team were able to consistently out manuever and individually strong Saxon team to take a 7:17 win. The second semi final saw the host come up against an NRW team who had been scoring for fun, but a dogged defensive performance saw the scores tied at 5-5 at half time. An extremely physical 2nd half saw NRW able to find holes in the Berlin defence and despite a late score by Berlin to close the gap, NRW took a 22:7 victory to reach the final

The 5th place playoff saw three very evenly matched teams duelling for position, and infact each team would record a win. Hessen took their first win of the day 15-7 in a close contest against RLP, but they weren’t able to continue the streak, falling 22:12 to a Thüringen team who looked like they had a point to prove. In the final game RLP knew they needed to beat Thüringen by at least 18 points if they were going to reach 5th place, and they came up with their best performance of the day, running in 6 tries to finish 42:0 winners!

The bronze final saw Berlin take on a Saxony team participating at just their first LVM. Berlin, having narrowly missed out on Bronze in 2023 were desperate to get back onto the podium, but were unable to regularly break down the Saxons. On the contrary, tired legs in the defence were evident and some excellent individual tries saw Saxony take a deserved 26:14 victory and the bronze medal.

The final saw two teams who had impressed the whole way through the tournament, brushing aside most teams with ease and finding ways to beat tougher opponents when needed. Both provinces pride themselves on their 7s programmes and the quality on show all day showed this in spades. The final game however was an advert for the hard work done by the Nordrhein Westphalen Rugby Verband, as their team dismantled Bayern 31:0 with excellent link up play, support and speed, all this despite being reduced to a squad size of only 8 players by the end of the day.

Congratulations to NRW on their LVM 2024 title!

Final Standings:

1st NRW
2nd Bayern
3rd Saxony
4th Berlin
5th RLP
6th Hessen
7th Thüringen
8th Hamburg
